Andrew Govenar joined Governmental Advocates, Inc. in 2000 as a lobbyist and public relations consultant after working for a former Speaker of the Assembly as Deputy Press Secretary. In that capacity he coordinated press activities with the Capitol press corps and the statewide media.
Before joining the Speaker's staff, Mr. Govenar was a Counselor at Nelson Communications Group, a statewide public relations firm. At Nelson, Mr. Govenar handled corporate public relations and legislative education programs for several NCG clients in the land use, transportation and health care industries. He also worked on several local and statewide initiative campaigns, including overseeing daily media relations and grassroots coalition efforts on a statewide ballot measure.
In 1999, Mr. Govenar took a temporary leave from NCG to serve as Director of Communications and Media Relations for the California Inaugural Committee, coordinating communications and media relations activities for nine inaugural events.
Mr. Govenar's experience in the state Capitol began in 1992 when he was hired as a Special Assistant to the Senate Commission on Cost Control in State Government. Mr. Govenar also served as Deputy Press Secretary to a former Senate President pro Tempore, and as a consultant to the chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus. Politically active since high school, Mr. Govenar worked as a volunteer on numerous political campaigns, an activity he continues as his peers and friends campaign to be elected officials.
Mr. Govenar graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communications from California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo. As a student, he was a member of the Cal Poly debate team and worked for the school radio station ( KCPR ).
Mr. Govenar is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking, boating and golfing. He is also an extremely enthusiastic Sacramento Kings fan.
