Melissa Cortez-Roth joined Governmental Advocates in 2000 after working in the State Capitol for a member of the California State Assembly, and for the Joint Legislative Audit Committee.

As a Legislative Aide in the Capitol, Ms. Cortez staffed a very active Southern California legislative officeholder. She worked on a wide variety of issues including healthcare, special education, labor relations, and the state budget. In this capacity, she established many positive working relationships with legislative staff, committee consultants and special interest groups.

While on staff for the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, Ms. Cortez was responsible for coordinating hearings, and communicating with the public and media. Ms. Cortez wrote and distributed all press advisories on the results of audits approved by the committee and conducted by the Bureau of State Audit. She also organized and staffed numerous investigative hearings and committee reports.

In addition to her legislative experience, Ms. Cortez has considerable campaign and outreach experience on a grass-roots level. She has walked countless precincts, run phone banks, organized political rallies and fundraisers, and helped to coordinate Election Day "get out the vote" efforts.

Ms. Cortez is an active member of the National Women’s Political Caucus, and Capitol Network, organizations which support political women’s networking as well as philanthropic activities. She is also a member of the newly formed Latina Leadership Network, which is dedicated to the advancements of young Latina women. In addition, Ms. Cortez has served as a volunteer at Mustard Seed, a transitional school for homeless children in the Sacramento region.

Ms. Cortez holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Journalism from the California State University at Sacramento.
